Radio-telemetry in full swing

A long term radio-telemetry study of wild gharial, initiated by the GCA, has run for three years. There are now a total of 20 animals tagged, ranging in size from 1.6m to 3.6m and our tagged group consists of 9 males and 11 females - close to a perfect ratio! This, the first ever long term telemetry based research project on wild gharial, has already turned up some super interesting results. In a nutshell, we now know that a gharial’s home range is a stretch of river 5-15km, increasing ~33% during the monsoon. However, long movement are made by animals who are thought to be moving to breed/nest. Individual animals have moved up to 150km in a single month!
