Ministry Appoints National Steering Committee for Gharial

Following a very successful meeting between members of the GCA and the Minister for Environment and Forests, Mr. Jairam Ramesh, the Ministry announced plans to form a National Coordination Committee to further gharial conservation. This committee will initially focus its efforts on the protection and management of gharial in the National Chambal Sanctuary in the state of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The National Tri-State Chambal Sanctuary Management Coordination Committee is a three tier
de-centralised mechanism, formed to look into the entire gamut of issues (from socio-economic to monitoring and research protocols), devise an institutional framework to ensure proper coordination
among all stakeholders and develop better coordination amongst three States and Centre for concerted
conservation initiatives with focus on involvement of local community.
