The Ken Gharial Sanctuary is much smaller at 45 km of protected river with very limited sand banks. The gharial population here has not achieved breeding success. A total of 79 gharials were released from captive bred stock since it became a Protected Area in 1985. This Sanctuary has very limited gharial habitat and further releases should not be undertaken without careful consideration.
