$ 10,000 Donation from Bergen Aquarium, Norway
The Gharial Conservation Alliance will receive a US $ 10,000 donation from the Bergen Aquarium, Norway, to continue its operations. Since it began functioning in 2004, the GCA has grown. Today there are 2 administrative staff, 5 field personnel, and field stations on the Chambal and Girwa Rivers. There are 3 field projects – a radio telemetry project and a survey of the Chambal on the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh sides while facilitating a nest habitat assessment project at Katerniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary. A survey of Corbett National Park led to the discovery of the fourth breeding population of gharial in the world. A rapid survey of the Hooghly determined that a few gharial washed down the Ganges during the annual monsoon floods may find shelter in the calmer sections of the river.
We are grateful to René Hedegaard of Danish Krok Zoo for facilitating this donation and for his continued support of GCA since the time of its inception.
